This is the sequel to „Something Strange and Deadly“
“With her brother dead and her mother insane, Eleanor Fitt is alone. Even the Spirit-Hunters—Joseph, Jie, and the handsome Daniel—have fled to Paris. So when Eleanor hears the vicious barking of hounds and sees haunting yellow eyes, she fears that the Dead, and the necromancer Marcus, are after her.
To escape, Eleanor boards a steamer bound for France. There she meets Oliver, a young man who claims to have known her brother. But Oliver harbors a dangerous secret involving necromancy and black magic that entices Eleanor beyond words. If she can resist him, she’ll be fine. But when she arrives in Paris, she finds that the Dead have taken over, and there’s a whole new evil lurking. And she is forced to make a deadly decision that will go against everything the Spirit-Hunters stand for.
In Paris, there’s a price for this darkness strange and lovely, and it may have Eleanor paying with her life”

Style of Writing
I love Susan Dennards style of writing! She knows exactly how to create a thrilling story, genuine characters and a world, you never want to leave. Her choice of words is amazing and everything just fits perfectly together. Also, you really get the feeling of that particular time due to her fantastic style of writing.
Eleanor Fitt has really grown up. She is a very strong personality who can (and has to) look after herself. Her stubbornness and curiosity is still present and she knows exactly what she wants and what she needs to do. She is one of my all-time favorite characters!
Daniel Sheridan seems to have changed a bit, when Eleanor arrives in Paris. Unfortunately he doesn’t appear too often in “A Darkness Strange and Lovely”, so I had to be content with the bits I got. Nonetheless he still is my latest book boyfriend!
Oliver is a new character in “A Darkness Strange and Lovely”. Although I won’t tell you who he is, I can assure you that he’s such a great character!
I never thought I’d be this addicted to the “Something Strange and Deadly” series. These books are truly amazing and “A Darkness Strange and Lovely” has been just as fantastic as the first book. Often I don’t quite like a second part in a trilogy as much as a like the other two books, because sometimes they seem to be only fill-ins. With “A Darkness Strange and Lovely” it has been quite the opposite.
There is a new setting in this book and there are new characters added, too, which makes it even more interesting. Eleanor travels from Philadelphia all the way to Paris and meets quite a few people on her journey. One of my new favorites is Oliver for sure. He is such a humorous and faithful character with very a big heart. Nonetheless, I still won’t tell you who he is (you’ll need to read it yourself!) ;-).
A huge part of the story itself takes place on the ship to Paris. I liked that fact a lot, since I do love to travel by ship myself. The other even bigger part is taking place in Paris. With her amazing writing Susan Dennard is able to create a very vivid picture of Paris. You literally seem to be there yourself. I’ve never been there yet, but after having read all those lovely descriptions it seems that I need to travel there one day myself and visit all the places Eleanor has been to.
Besides Setting and Characters the story itself has a lot of twists and turns you would never guess, so expect you to be surprised a lot! In addition you get to know a whole lot more about the Dead and everything that has to do with spiritual energy. I loved dipping deeper into all those mysterious things and find out the reasons behind.
There is only one aspect I would have loved to get more of: Daniel! I fell for him the second we were introduced and, unfortunately, in “A Darkness Strange and Lovely” he isn’t too present. Also, Eleanor and Daniel simply belong together!! There is no other way!
“A Darkness Strange and Lovely” is a fantastic sequel and Susan Dennard is such a talented writer! New setting and characters make this book a whole different story and more importantly a page-turner. I highly recommend you to keep reading!!
