This is the sequel to „These Broken Stars“!
“Lee is captain of the forces sent to Avon to crush the terraformed planet’s rebellious colonists, but she has her own reasons for hating the insurgents.
Rebellion is in Flynn’s blood. Terraforming corporations make their fortune by recruiting colonists to make the inhospitable planets livable, with the promise of a better life for their children. But they never fulfilled their promise on Avon, and decades later, Flynn is leading the rebellion.
Desperate for any advantage in a bloody and unrelentingly war, Flynn does the only thing that makes sense when he and Lee cross paths: he returns to base with her as prisoner. But as his fellow rebels prepare to execute this tough-talking girl with nerves of steel, Flynn makes another choice that will change him forever. He and Lee escape the rebel base together, caught between two sides of a senseless war.
The stunning second novel in the Starbound trilogy is an unforgettable story of love and forgiveness in a world torn apart by war.”

Style of Writing
Again, I’ve been fascinated by how well Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner harmonize! Their style of writing is beautiful and full of pictures. I love it so much! They create such unique worlds and special characters.
Jubilee, short Lee, is a tough girl deployed on the planet Avon as a soldier. Everyone tells she’s got no heart, but in fact her heart is way bigger than anyone else’s. She’s a girl you’d wish yourself for your best friend! I liked her from the beginning.
Flynn is a rebel on Avon. He’s a very smart and handsome guy and I fell in love with him the second I got to know him. It seriously is no wonder that Lee is attracted to him.
Their love story is so unique and they are adorable together!
“This Shattered World” is the sequel to “These Broken Stars”, which I loved a lot. So obviously, I had quite high expectations in this book. It didn’t take long for me to completely plunge into the story and was happy enough that my expectations have even been exceeded.
Unlike you might have guessed, “This Shattered World” is the story of two completely new characters in a whole new world. We’re introduced to the planet Avon, which isn’t fully terraformed yet, and the soldier Jubilee and the rebel Flynn, who naturally would have been deadly enemies. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner are able to create a very fascinating and vivid world, so you’re hooked from the first page. I liked both new characters, Jubilee and Flynn, a lot. In fact I’d say I even liked them better than Tarver and Lilac from book one. These characters are so complete and real and their minds are so bright. It’s a pleasure having “met” them. Nonetheless you don’t need to be sad, Tarver and Lilac aren’t completely gone ;-)!
As in my “InProcess”-post already mentioned the book is structured similarly to “These Broken Stars”. The chapters are alternating from the point of view from Jubilee and Flynn and at the beginning there are always bits of texts which don’t tell the actual story. In “This Shattered World” you get glimpses of somebody’s dreams, but you can’t quite bring them into line with the story until the very end. I absolutely love books being structured this well.
The story itself is very intense. Unlike in “These Broken Stars” there hasn’t been one single page without action, so the story has always been very gripping for the reader, because you never get a chance to relax. I shared the thrill with Lee and Flynn throughout the whole book and felt with them the entire time.
One additional thing I love a lot about the Starbound-trilogy is the fact that all physical aspects are so well-researched! It’s always quite interesting and maybe even important for me as a prospective physicist ;-)! So that fact is really impressing.
Oh, and the cover?! So beautiful!
“This Shattered World” is SOO GOOD! I loved every single page of it and Lee and Flynn grew dear to my heart. I’m sad the story is already over and I’m really looking forward to the final book “Their Fractured Light”, which unluckily won’t be published before the end of the year. Yet I’m very excited to meet Tarver, Lilac, Lee and Flynn again. Really, if you haven’t read this book yet, you totally should do that! It’s one of the best I’ve ever read.
